We’re now in week 12 of being “on the road”. That means, 3 months of being away from “home” and being on the other side of the world. Am I homesick?
Coming to Chiang Mai was our first destination (of our slow travels) that we were both looking forward to. Most of our research on Chiang Mai was positive (with the exception of one video I saw). Everyone raved about how they loved this city. Hence, why we were excited to finally get here.
When we first moved into our apartment in Chiang Mai, I couldn’t “settle in”. I felt like I was “lying” to myself. The apartment itself felt fine, with everything that I needed and similar to what I’d get at home. However, once I stepped out of the apartment, I just wanted to turn around and go back in.
Lately, it’s gotten better, but I still have my days where I just wanna head back to familiar grounds.
Am I homesick? I don’t necessarily long to be back in Toronto or be back home, but I miss the North American living that I’m accustomed to. In other words, I miss knowing how things work; knowing that if I have a question, I can just ask and be able to understand and be able to communicate clearly.
This is the difference between slow travels and a vacation (or quicker stops). You really get a feel living in a certain place for a longer period of time. I don’t think I was 100% prepared for this.
Who knows, maybe Thailand isn’t right for me. We’ll see as we continue onto a new destination in our slow travels journey.
