Prior to embarking on this travel journey, I knew that we needed to differentiate between travelling as a vacation and travelling as daily life. They were two distinct things which had to be carefully monitored.
Vacation vs Travel Life
Going on a vacation meant a limited time; and since there is an end to the vacation, usually there is also a “budget”. I put this term in quotations since when we travelled, there was really no budget. However, we knew that it was only for a few days or weeks.
At the beginning of this travel journey, there was difficulty in separating the two. I struggled with having a budget while in a new place. We wanted to explore and to try out all the different foods. Plus, we aren’t familiar with having a budget so it was all new to us.
With much thought and experience from our first few months on this travel journey, we are better aware of what type of lifestyle we want. We also realize that this travel journey is something very special for us; it’s not typical, that’s for sure. Therefore, with this clarity, we have become more relaxed and am able to enjoy these special moments of this travel journey.
Sometimes I stop and think, “Is this real life?” I have been off work for 7 months, the longest I have ever been “off” since I graduated from University. Heck, even in University I never had this much time off.
Most people would think that this is not typical and that we should be working at our careers. However, we met an older lady on the cruise ship who, I’m assuming was retire. When we told her we have been travelling since October 2018, her response was “best to do it now that you can”. Not that I needed affirmation from a total stranger, but this was exactly my thoughts when we were deciding on whether to proceed on this journey.
Even though I feel like we’re a minority (again!) on this travel journey at our age, I’m over the moon thrilled that we get to live this life.
I’ve always thought about the impact or my contribution in this life and now I feel that I do and will have an impact. Who can tell a story about retiring early and living like locals in foreign places?? Travelling to different countries and sharing our experiences. Even if just a handful of people appreciate, listen and feel inspired after hearing our story. This, I hope, will be my impact.
